Is "variety" a good thing? Is it possible to have too many choices available to you and not know how to choose even one?
I ask this because Android development is a lot like M&M's. There is just so much variety that to the normal consumer you get overwhelmed with options...I mean you know it's bad when you have every flavor you could possibly want but you still cannot make up your mind! lol
Although, I am of the belief that consumers always want the original experience in the end. Let's say there is a chocolate fudge flavored M&M out there (may well be) of course you want to taste it to see what it likes but really I would find it difficult to believe that you would enjoy it more than your basic variety M&M's and also the nostalgia that comes into play.
The way Android devices get manufactured is a lot like this. You for the most part get the same operating system(OS) running on completely different models of devices. From phones, tablets, digital media devices and laptops. You just can't seem to get a unified platform because Google is allowing so many different manufacturers to create whatever model they want. From low to high end devices it's like trying to find your favorite coffee mug after a tornado just turned your house into a badly maintained outside flea market, only on this occasion negotiating wasn't a viable option lol.
Now, I have thought about this some and what I think could happen to make this all the more accessible to common consumers looking to buy a new Android powered device is this....Google likes to release a "pure" Google device every year or so branded the Nexus. This is usually a cell phone or tablet with decent to high end specs running only the latest and greatest Android OS. No carrier bloatware to frustrate you and no different experience other than just a clean OS that often gives you fast performance, never released OS and usually a lower price to competitive devices.
Conclusion-
What all of this means is as all of us consumers "in the know" are well and taken care of it's our friends and families(the normal consumer) who shouldn't have to become frustrated and sometimes unfortunately being taken advantage of for not knowing what experience they are getting into and thinking it will be just like all the commercials and people using the Iphone they have seen with their unified one OS and one model fits all. It's just not there yet for Android but it's getting closer, at least OS wise with the release of Jellybean said to bring in a new era of unification but manufacturers need only to create the necessary models and not overload people with to many choices if they want to build a much stronger culture. This is a lesson that could be learned from Apple.
